Party Like a Rock Star

I was out of my element last night and it was a good experience for me! A few of our kids came to Matt and asked if they could put together a "benefit" concert for our youth trip to Florida. He said sure! Little did we know what the night would look like.

The kids brought together 6 area bands that are pretty popular to the youth. They advertised (with the power of myspace) 6 bucks for 6 bands! We knew this would be the first exposure to church that a lot of these kids have ever had, so we tried to provide the best possible environment for both fun and safety for all. As the soundcheck started and all I heard was loud music and screaming in the microphone, I realized it was going to be a very long night!

Aubrey and I were the bouncers at the door. We were the perfect team: no non-sense, tell it like it is and we really didn't care if the kids cussed us out or got mad at us. I took the money and Aubrey stamped their left hand. Some of them weren't very fond of us when we told them there was no re-entry. We heard a few choice words and got some looks, but Aubrey and I stood firm! :)

We ended up having 123 kids in attendance! It was huge! A lot of them dressed very differently than what I'm used to, but I realized that really they are all the same. They all have a desire to be wanted, needed...to be heard! No, the bands weren't christian bands and they were using foul language themselves. But, we got to interact with a lot of kids that we normally wouldn't be able to. And our kids got to see that faith and life can intersect. So I was stretched last night...WAY out of my comfort zone. But we had a good night!

  1. It's good that you have a lot of patience! I'm glad everything went well. Maybe some of them will start coming to church! (sounds like they need it. lol)
