The Envelope System "Prettified"

My mom sent a link to this "Prettified" envelope system to me yesterday and I thought it was an awesome variation to our Envelope system, especially for scrapbookers! We follow Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace plan and I can truly say it gives you peace. Matt and I started taking the class the 2nd or 3rd week we were married and have followed it ever since. We started off with $70,000 of school debt, and we have paid off almost half of that in three years. We should be debt free in no more than 5 years from now! So exciting! Following the plan has saved us from many arguments that I'm sure would have happened had we not been on the same page.

We have cash envelopes for the following:
  • Food
  • Gas
  • Rent
  • Gym membership
  • Entertainment
  • Blow Money (serves no purpose other than what you want to spend it on)
  • Car Repairs
The rest we put into the checking account to pay for bills. But every single dollar has a name and purpose.

Here's a portion of an article from Dave's website with some tips to get you back on track with your money:

Sit down and evaluate.
Take a few minutes to look at your bank accounts and really understand what you see. If you don't, you run the high risk of living these next few months like Gomer Pyle on Valium, with no clue about your money. You don't want that, do you?

Update your game plan or start one for the first time.
A budget is your game plan, where you tell your money what you want it to do. This isn't rocket science! Just give every dollar a name on paper before you get your paycheck so it won't all be gone in a week. Get free budgeting forms here.

Put cash in envelopes.
Since you spend 12-15% more when you use plastic than when you use cash, try the envelope system. Take some envelopes, write the budget categories on the envelopes, and use only the allotted money to purchase specific things. If an envelope is empty, don't buy anything else in that category for the month. It can wait.

Set boundaries for yourself and your family.
A lot of this centers around the ability to say the word NO and really mean it! Sometimes you're going to have to tell yourself, your spouse, and your kids "NO! It's not in the budget!" so be prepared. It's a phrase you'll be glad you know how to say.

Commit now to making your budget a priority over the next few months. Just by incorporating these seemingly small changes into your daily habits, you will reap many rewards in all areas of your life. It's time to get back on track, and we're here to help you along the way!

Pre-Marriage Scrapbook

This is the scrapbook I started creating when Matt and I were dating. It isn't complete yet, but this is what I had started. :) Let's hope I can get a scrapbook completed this summer!

Blog Design and Scrapbook for Matt

My friend Mindy wanted to update her blog so this is what I came up with. I really like it!

I now only work four days a week, so I'm pretty excited to start focusing more on the blog design work!

On a random note, more scrapbook pages! :)

Matt is very sentimental and loves to keep things -- including piles of pictures. So, I surprised him a few years ago by putting some of them in a scrapbook. These are a few of my favorite pages from that book:

Engagement Scrapbook

I have really enjoyed sharing my scrapbook pages with all of my blog friends! So I thought I would share some more...

I made an entire scrapbook for our engagement. Matt surprised me in Paris on the Eiffel Tower (I thought I was going to a party for friends). I had no idea that he was even in the country - I thought he was in an intensive week at school! He then got to spend 8 days with me!

More Wedding Scrapbook

Having this new desk in my living room is dangerous - I might actually complete my wedding scrapbook! Although I was up until midnight working on one page last night!

It looks like it might be a nice day outside - at least up here in Northern, IL - so I hope you all can get outside and enjoy it!

Wedding Scrapbook

I spent part of this weekend getting a few more pages done in my wedding scrapbook. Matt set up my new scrapbooking "station" in our living room. I love it! Its so nice to be in the living room with Matt while each of us can do our own thing! You can click on the pictures to get a larger view of the pages.

Rummage Sale, Matt's Gone and My Sister Is Here!

Another crazy weekend! Does it ever stop? I'm beginning to think not. My sister was telling me last night that when life becomes routine, people live that routine instead of living life. I am beginning to feel as if we are living crazy busy.

Anyway, this weekend was our annual church rummage sale which supports our youth trip this summer. I wish I had pictures from this weekend because we had SO MUCH stuff! We had so much left over as well that we are going to do another one in a month or two. Well, the youth made $2000! It was great! People started showing up at 6:30 AM!

Matt started trying to find things from our place to put into the rummage sale. I kept encouraging him to go through his closet and dressers, but he wasn't really interested. An hour later, I noticed a huge pile of clothes on our couch:

Matt cleaned out his closet of all of his old clothes. He has lost almost 50 pounds since we got married and has gone down two shirt sizes. So all of his old clothes were way too big, but he still wanted to hold onto them. I was so proud of him that he was getting rid of some things.

Then I looked into his closet...

Its mostly empty! He really did get rid of it all! YAY!!!! Then I realized we need to get him some new clothes. :) But that's a good problem to have!

I will write more tomorrow on Matt's trip and my time with my sister...this post is too long already.

Oh and by the way, I am so excited because there was this awesome desk at the rummage sale and I was telling someone that it would be a great scrapbooking table. Someone overheard me say that and asked Matt if they could buy it for me! I don't know where its going to go, but I have a new scrapbooking desk!! :)

Wedding Scrapbook

Its only taken 1 1/2 years but I finally started scrapbooking my wedding pictures. Matt was gone for a conference so I just took over the kitchen table.

Scrapbooking is therapy for me! I love to engulf myself into creating pages for my memories. Here are pictures of two of my pages that I created. If you click on the picture, you will get a larger view.
